Melvin Glenn Martin, 83, passed away in Sandpoint on Tuesday, December 21, 2010.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 PM, Wednesday, December 29th in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. Pastor Kenneth Buck will be officiating and interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Melvin was born in Walthill, Nebraska on August 26, 1927. He attended schools in Macy, Nebraska prior to joining the US Army and serving in Korea. In 1947 he hitchhiked from Nebraska to Sandpoint and started working as a logger. On June 4, 1949 he married Peggy Shuster in Newport, Washington.
Melvin worked on both the Albeni Falls Dam and the Cabinet Gorge Dams and he worked construction in the Northwest. He was a member of the Teamsters Union, Sandpoint Local. In 1967 he became a gypo logger locally, operating his own trucks and loaders. He retired in February 1987 for health reasons.
Melvin enjoyed hunting, fishing, gathering mushrooms, picking huckleberries, and having his “morning coffee” at the Pastime.
He is survived by his wife, of 61 years, Peggy Martin, in Sandpoint, ID; 3 sons Allen (and Sandra) Martin in Colville, WA; Dale (and Peggy) Martin in Hayden, ID; Jack Martin, in Sandpoint, ID; 6 grandchildren Colleen, Debbie, Kayla, Stephanie, Bryon, and Keenan; 5 great grand sons and 2 great great grand children. Also surviving is his brother Lyle (and Joan) Martin in Fremont, NE; and his sister Cleta (and Doug) Bell in Ft Worth, TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 3 brothers Duward, Kenton, and Leslie.
