United States Coast Guard Captain Richard T. Brower, retired, entered into rest at his home on Sunday, January 30, 2011, with his beloved wife of almost 57 years, Ann, at his side.
Born in Amsterdam, New York, on September 1, 1931, Dick spent many years serving our country in his career with the Coast Guard. After graduating in 1949 from Johnstown High School in New York, Dick attended and was commissioned upon graduation from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1954 with his Bachelor of Science, General Engineering degree.
His immediate next step was to marry the love of his life, Ann Belden, on June 4, 1954. While serving his country, Dick started a family of his own and, in addition to his wife, Ann, leaves behind three children, Mary Kay, Steven Brower and Nancy Mead, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one brother.
Dick furthered his education by graduating with a Master of Science in Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh in 1967 with a 4.0 GPA. He gave 28 years of service in the military then began a civilian career which included positions of successively increasing management responsibility in program, personnel and budgetary administration. From managing multi-million dollar maintenance programs in Washington D.C. to Seattle, Washington, where he worked for the U.S. Department of Transportation as the Deputy Regional Representative of the Secretary of Transportation in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and Alaska, Dick continued to life a life of service.
Dick moved to Sandpoint, Idaho in 1978 where he built the family home on property he loved. Before retirement, he served with the State of Idaho, Liquor Control Board, working in both Sandpoint and Bonners Ferry. He also served as Administrator for the City of Sandpoint in 1978-1981, overseeing operations of all city departments, supervision and management of grant programs, as well as preparation and management of the City’s budget. Dick also spent over 15 of his 33 years in Sandpoint serving as the Episcopal Church’s treasurer.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00AM in Sandpoint on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, on highway 2 and Rocky Point Road, Dover, with the Reverends JP and Barbara Carver presiding. Coffelt Funeral Service is in charge of services. Dick’s ashes will be scattered at a later date on the family property. The family suggests donations in Dick’s memory may be given to the American Lung Association, American Diabetes Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.
