Harp Turnbull

Harp Turbull, 93, passed away, in Sagle, on May 5, 2007. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, May 11, 2007 in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel, 109 N. Division Ave., in Sandpoint, Idaho. Dale Coffelt will officiate with interment following in the Westmond Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday afternoon, May 10, 2007 from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Coffelt Funeral Service. Harp was born in Sagle, Idaho on July 3, 1913 the son of Thomas and Phoebe Turnbull. His father, in 1882, camped north of what is now Sandpoint, and later settled on the Turnbull homesite south of what was to become Sagle. The family established homesteader’s rights after the railroad survey was done. Harp attended school in the Sagle area through the 8th grade and then went to work for the CCC’s, earning $1.00 per day. He worked for the H.E. Brown Lumber Company, working in the woods and playing baseball for the company team. He sawed logs, earning $4.00 per day. He was instrumental in the Sagle Baseball team for many years and the team was the North Idaho Champions, also playing Canadian teams. He played in the winter league in Los Angeles and was offered a contract by the Chicago Cubs. He farmed, and ranched, on the family farm in Sagle, raising beef cattle, feeding cattle out, and expanding the ranch to what it is today. On January 26, 1953 Harp and Rosemary (Dolly) Eldred were married in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Harp and Dolly worked together in the Westmond Cemetery project for many years with Harp serving as president and Dolly the secretary treasurer for the Westmond Cemetery Association. Harp, with Dolly by his side, enjoyed working, hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors of North Idaho. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many many friends survive him. Harp was preceded in death by his parents and on May 31, 2004; Dolly passed away after 51 years of marriage. Memorials may be made to the Westmond Cemetery Association, PO Box 879, Sagle, Idaho, 83860; in memory of Harp Turnbull.
