Robert Kerr Waring of Baltimore, age 82, died in Sandpoint, Idaho on May 1, 2011 from a stroke. He was born August 18, 1928 in Palmerton, PA, the son of Robert and Clara (Lane) Waring.
There will be a memorial service for Bob at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Coffelt’s Funeral Home, with a potluck luncheon to follow at the Sandpoint Friend’s Meeting House, 1025 Alder St., in Sandpoint.
In 1946, Bob graduated from Palmerton High School. Then, in 1950, he graduated first in his class from Virginia Military Institute with a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant. During the Korean War, when he was a graduate student in the department of Physics of Yale University and working for the Navy, he was called to active duty. On the day he was to report, he received a reprieve. That was the last of his military career and he later became a lifelong Quaker.
On November 25, 1954, Bob married Judith (Malin) Waring and moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where he worked for 30 years at the E.I. DuPont de Nemours Co. as a research physicist. Bob and Judith raised 4 children in Wilmington.
Bob’s favorite job came after his retirement when he was asked to teach 5 or 6 seniors at a select private high school who wanted more physics than the curriculum offered.
From Wilmington, Bob and Judith moved to Downingtown, PA, and then to Sandpoint, Idaho where they lived from 1999 until moving to Baltimore in 2008. Bob was very active in Quaker meetings in each city until his health failed and he moved back to The Bridge Assisted Living facility in Sandpoint just 6 weeks ago.
His father taught him to sail. In spite of capsizing on his first outing at age 6, he owned and sailed boats for much of his life. Bob rode his bike to work long before it was fashionable and continued to do so well into his 70’s.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and recently by his only brother, Davie Lane Waring.
Surviving him are his wife of 56 years, Judith Malin Waring; his son, Adam LeCompte Waring (Don Cummings) of New York; his daughters, Sarah Waring Mohan and Rebecca Saunders Waring, both of Baltimore, and Ann Waring Faggard (John) of Sandpoint; and by his grandchildren, William, Susannah, and Rose Mohan, and Nathan and Elisabeth Faggard.
The family suggests memorials be given in Bob’s name to American Friends Service Committee, AFSC Development, 1501 Cherry St., Philadelphia, PA 19102, or Southern Poverty Law Center, 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery, AL 36104 or if you wish to contribute online go to splcenter.org.
