Dixie Terry passed away Monday June 13, 2011 at his home in Sandpoint after a long and courageous battle against COPD.
A private family memorial will be held in Sandpoint. Military services and interment will be held at Sheridan Cemetery in Auburn, NE later this summer.
Dixie was born to Shelby and Bertha (Dunlavy) Pummel in Auburn, NE on November 22, 1938. His mother died shortly after and he was adopted by Everett and Ida Mae (Allgood) Terry who lovingly raised him in Auburn, NE.
He attended school in Auburn and was very active in the music programs. He was accepted to Juilliard School of Music but family events prevented his attendance. He joined the US Air Force in 1959. He was a special investigator for OSI and completed three tours of Vietnam ending his career as an air traffic controller at Clark AF base.
Following his honorable discharge he moved to Sandpoint in 1979. He worked for the Bonner County Sherriff’s office and was an investigator for the Public Defender’s office. He moved to Jackpot, NV for a year working security and as a card dealer for Cactus Pete’s. He returned to Sandpoint and went to work at Gas n’ Go for ten years retiring in 1996 when he was diagnosed with COPD.
The Air Force instilled in him a wander lust and he was always happy when he was “on the road again”. He loved to travel and was unhappy that he could not drive the motorhome but was always ready to go. He enjoyed reading, tinkering on cars and loved to fish. His greatest joy was spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his companion of 30 years and wife Sandi (Haugse); Dan (Jennifer) Terry and granddaughter Maiya; Laura Terry and granddaughter Alina; Brandt Bricker; and Deborah ( Dave) DeBruhl and grandchildren Jacob and Kayla. He is also survived by his sister Jean Scott (Art); nieces Brenda and Sherri; several cousins in Nebraska; and his special friend Brownie Balison.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Grace Irene Smith and Shirley Burnham; and his special canine buddy, Rascal.
Memorials may be made in his honor to Vietnam Veterans, PO Box 2014, Sandpoint, ID 83864; or Sheridan Cemetery tree fund, 1403 F Street, Auburn, NE 68305.
