.Ellis “Ed” Smith, 89, of Sandpoint passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at his home.
In celebration of Ed’s life, a potluck and barbeque will be held at Ed’s home, 11919 Baldy Road August 6, 2011 at 12:00 Noon.
He was born April 10, 1922 in Sandpoint, Idaho, the son of Daymond and Lena Watson Smith. He grew up and was educated in Sandpoint, graduating Sandpoint High School in 1940. Following graduation he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was sent to France and was in the landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy.
While in France he met Josiane Restout who became the love of his life. They married on Aug. 4, 1945 at Grand Camp les Bains, France. Following his discharge he returned to Sandpoint and his wife followed him on a War Bride’s ship nine months later.
Ed worked as a logger for a time and in 1957 began working for Pack River Lumber and remained employed there until it closed. He enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially motorcycling, boating, fishing, and snowmobiling. He was a charter member of the Winter Riders Snowmobile Club. Ed and Jo also enjoyed traveling, making numerous trips to France and excursions around Europe. They also enjoyed traveling around the Northwest and Southwest in their motorhome.
Ed is survived by his wife of 65 years, 2 children: Lena (Jim) Harting, Dan Smith (Roxanna Johnson) both of Sandpoint; grandchildren: Danielle (Tony) Carrico of Coeur d’ Alene, ID, Heidi (Will) Rex of Helena, MT, Dan Harting of California, Jeff Harting of Las Vegas, NV, Danielle Linton of Chatteroy, WA, Kourtney Johnson and Brittney Hanson both of Sandpoint: and great grandchildren: Mia and Ali Carrico, Jacob and Adi Rex and Orion Harting. He was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.
