Robert W. Gleiser, 87 passed away in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho on Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2011.
Robert was born in Lake Forest, IL on Sept. 7, 1924 the son of Lorenz and Louise Gleiser. He graduated from high school in Lake Forest in 1942 and later studied auto mechanics. He later moved to Tucson, AZ, working on the WW II airplanes.
In 1945 he moved to the Los Angeles area working for Lockheed and other aircraft manufacturing companies. He continued working for Autonetics, North American Rockwell, Martin Marietta, McDonald Douglas, and finally TRW. He worked on many well known projects including the construction of the Constellation airliner, the Skylab, theViking program for the Mars Lander, the Apollo program which put man on the moon, and many other space projects.
Robert married Joyce Wentworth on July 7, 1963 in North Hollywood, California. He retired in 1976 and in 1977 moved to Sandpoint, Idaho.
He was a member of the Sandpoint Assembly of God Church and a 40 year member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. He enjoyed model railroading, reading about the history of WW II and boating in California.
He is survived by his wife, of 48 years, Joyce Gleiser in Sandpoint, Idaho; 3 children Nancy Louise (Gleiser) Weisser in Portland, OR; Robert L. Gleiser in Silverdale, WA; Darrin A. Gleiser in Nampa, ID; a grandson Ian Weisser in Milwaukee, WI; and 3 great grandchildren Aden, Mona and Quinn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister.
