Vernon Edward “Shorty” Shadel, 88, of Sandpoint, passed away, Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Hearthstone Village in Kootenai, Idaho.
Memorial services will be conducted 11:00AM, Saturday, November 5, 2011 at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Sandpoint Ward, North Boyer Avenue, Sandpoint Idaho. Interment will take place in the Pack River Cemetery. Friends may call at Coffelt Funeral Chapel on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011 from 3:00-6:00PM.
Vernon was born February 26, 1923 in Kansas, the son of William Henry and Ethel May (Leigh) Shadel. He moved to Idaho when he was 10 months old with his parents and two older brothers.
Vernon attended the Pack River School (now Northside School) and graduated from the 8th grade there. In 1942 he graduated from Sandpoint High School in Sandpoint. After graduation he worked at Farragut Naval Base, farmed and did custom combining.
On April 18, 1945 he married Harriett Pauline Wood at the home of her parents in Selle.
Vernon did carpenter work at the Cabinet George Dam and Albeni Falls Dam. He owned and operated the Shadel Lumber Company in the Selle area for over 10 years. He sawed lumber and built a new home for the family in 1953. He also did millwright and carpentry work for several mills in the area. Vernon worked for Ruen Farms as a carpenter and Ruen Core Drilling as an equipment operator.
Vernon was the secretary/treasurer for the Pack River Cemetery from 1972-2003. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Sandpoint Ward. He and Harriett enjoyed playing cards with friends and dances at the local grange halls.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 66 years, Harriett; 5 children: Sharon Williamson of Libby, Montana, Kenneth (Peggy) Shadel, Sandpoint, Idaho, Michael (Linda) Shadel, Phoenix, Arizona, Ronald (Angie) Shadel, Sandpoint Idaho, and Mary Ann (Jeff) Douglas of Pensacola, Florida; two brothers: Francis (Helen) Shadel of San Jose, California, Leigh Shadel of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; 1 sister: Grace (Vincent) Escriva of Elkton, Oregon; 12 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
