Julie Ann Wahlgren passed away on Nov. 25, 2011 in Sandpoint following a long illness.
She was born on December 18, 1927 in the Oden farmhouse of her parents, Dan and Amelia Zaklan. She was raised on the farm with her seven brothers and two sisters. After graduating from Sandpoint High School, she attended both Lewiston State Normal School and Eastern Washington College of Education, earning a degree in teaching in 1949. Her first teaching position was in Great Falls, Montana where she met Lawrence Wahlgren, a dashing Air Force pilot stationed at Malmstrom Air Force Base. She and Larry married in 1953, had two lovely children and travelled the world, courtesy of the United States Air Force.
Larry retired from the Air Force in 1968 and they moved to Sandpoint where Julie began a 20-year much-loved career as a fifth grade schoolteacher at Farmin Elementary School. She was widowed in 1975 and retired from teaching in 1988.
She is survived by her two children, Jody and Jeff Wahlgren; her brother and sister-in-law, Stan and Martha Leah Zaklan of Portland, Oregon; her sister and brother-in-law Sophie and Harry Guichard of San Francisco, California and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be missed.
