Carl Frederick Bartz, Jr., age 84, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at his home in Hope, Idaho. Carl was born February 16, 1927 in Toston, Montana, son of Carl Frederick Bartz, Sr. and Anna Stockburger.
Carl attended school in a one room school house up six mile creek out of Toston, Montana. He grew up and worked on the family ranch until he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
While traveling by train on the Northern Pacific Railway, Carl met the love of his life, Dorothy Zarembka. Dorothy could not resist those blue eyes and dimples and they were married
July 11, 1953 at Mary Queen of Heaven Church in Cicero, Illinois.
Carl was an experienced mechanic and welder. He owned and operated a welding and machine shop in Wilsall, Mt. as well as two gas stations, at different times, in the Livingston area. He later went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad as a machinist/welder and finally retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad in Livingston, Mt.
Soon after retiring, Carl and Dorothy moved to their current home in Hope, Idaho overlooking Lake Pend Oreille. They so enjoyed boating, fishing and square dancing. Carl was an avid hunter and fisherman. He won the K & K fishing Derby on Lake Pend Oreille in 1998.
As his two boys grew up, Carl coached their T-Ball and Little League Baseball teams. He started the boys’ basketball program at St. Mary’s School. He was active in the Knights of Columbus at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the V.F.W./American Legion in Livingston. Carl was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Livingston, Mt as well as the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clark Fork, Idaho.
Carl is survived by his loving wife, of over 58 years and his six children; Michael (Vicky) of Pasco, Wa., Annamarie (Larry) DeYoung of Livingston, Mt., Sandra (Leo) Block of Florence, Mt., Connie (Herb) Koch of Renton, Wa., David (Kristine) of Wichita, KS, and Kathy Perryman (Audie Hanley) of Hope, Idaho, twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Carl is also survived by his mother-in-law, Marion Woods, age 99, of Ponderay, Idaho.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eddie and Bobby Bartz of Toston, Mt.
A memorial mass will be held Thursday, December 1st at 11 am at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Clark Fork, Idaho.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Church Building Fund in Sandpoint, Idaho.
