Melvin R. (Bud) Hanson passed away peacefully, with family members at his side, on January 15th, 2012. A second generation native and lifelong North Idaho resident, he was born April 5th, 1924 in Sandpoint, Idaho to Ralph and Verda Mae Hanson, the 3rd of five children. Bud was a World War II veteran, completing his basic training at Farragut Naval Base. After the war, he returned to North Idaho and worked at various jobs including logging and mining. He retired from Brand S Lumber Company as a purchasing agent.
One of his life’s achievements was building the family’s dream home on Pine Street, salvaging brick from a three story hotel he had torn down. He also used timber from train trestles that were removed in Spokane during the time of Expo ’74. The home became a gathering place for his large family, creating lots of happy memories.
He is probably best known for his imaginative story-telling. He could always entertain a group with tales about early logging camps, local history, mining experiences, and family times. An animal lover, he raised livestock, chickens, rabbits and pigeons at the house in town. Bud enjoyed North Idaho recreational opportunities including huckleberry picking, mushroom hunting, and teaching children and grandchildren how to hunt and fish. He truly cared about others, especially those less fortunate in life. Bud never met a stranger, and frequently invited people home to dinner, or offered his home to people who needed a place to stay. He had an infectious smile, a good heart and he loved his family who will miss him dearly.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 68 years Josephine, his six children: Bob (Tae) Hanson, Rick (Donna) Hanson, Ron (Ranel) Hanson, Gayle (Jack) McElroy, Sue (Chuck) Haynes, Rhonda (Ben) Tate; 17 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild ; his brother Delbert (Carol) Hanson in Manson, Washington; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. His family is appreciative of the excellent care he has received over the years, especially from the staff at Hearthstone Village in Kootenai.
A service celebrating Bud’s life will be held February 4th at 2:00 at Coffelt’s Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the food bank.
