Wayne E. Hawkins, 89, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, March 23, 2012 at 11:00 am, in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel will Pastor Steve Bradshaw of the Cocolalla Cowboy Church Officiating. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Born 9/10/22 In Stonington, Colorado to George Noel and Ina Cloe Hawkins 7th child. He has 7 sisters and 4 brothers preceded in death by parents, 3 brothers (Perk, Lyn, and Robert), and 3 sisters (Pearl, Opal, and Noeline) Surviving siblings, Ruby, Lawana, Janie, Beulah, and Ralph
In 1924 His Dad, Mom, Grandma Pendarvis and 8 kids plus belongings loaded up the Model T Truck and drove across the country from Stonington, CO to Sandpoint, ID.
His Dad, George was working for Grandma Pendarvis on her farm in Stonington which she sold during a drought. The money was used to travel to Sandpoint. They almost ended up in New Mexico. They bought a mini farm of 40 acres at first then later bought 20 more on Hawkins Road off Lakeshore Drive. Dad George traded the Model T truck for a team of mules and a wagon which they used to clear land for the milking cows. Grandma Pendarvis agreed to use her farm sale proceeds to build a house, garage, and barn in exchange for lifetime care.
The family logged and picked huckleberries in the summer, hunted in the fall and fished commercially in winter for income. At age 16 Wayne hunted elk and deer with his dad and brothers. They all loved it.
He played league baseball for many years then coached Little and then Pony League, also he worked as umpire for many games. Steeeeriiiike!!
1942-1945 Wayne served his beloved country honorably in the Army driving jeep.
Between 45 and 47 he worked in the family run Sawmill, then in 47 for a year he worked for a Rural Electric Association (REA)
Then a local Dover (Pack River) Sawmill boss, Lumblad, was watching a baseball game that Wayne was playing and afterward approached him with a fulltime job offer. Wayne played for the Pack River fast pitch softball team after accepting the job, from which he retired in 1984.
He married a wonderful gal, Betty Bloom, in 1950, and had 4 wonderful children, (Randy, Marceen married to Mike Williams, Gail married to Corky Kalben, and Kim) all born in Sandpoint, Id. Marceen and Gail still live here, Randy lives in Texas and Kim in Colorado.
He has 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren : Randy‘s: Barry, Andrea married to Jason with one child [Sydney] and Seth. Marceen’s: Shawn married to Christine with 2 children [Brooke & Nickolas] and Brandi married to Rusty Cessna with 2 children [Jaize & Logan], Gail’s: Nicole, Trevor, and Zachariah married to Sarah.
He enjoyed playing horseshoes, cards, a mandolin, and a mouth harp (harmonica ) with family and friends. He also had a killer serve in ping pong.
After retirement he spent many days hunting, fishing, and RVing with his wife, extended family, and friends. In the winter they were snowbirds for a few years enjoying the Arizona sun.
In September 2010 just before his 87th birthday he received Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized into a new family in Christ by Pastor Steve Bradshaw and has been attending Cowboy Church regularly with his wife and daughters.
