Harriett Shadel of Sandpoint, Idaho, passed away on May 3, 2012, at the Hearthstone Village in Kootenai, Idaho, at the age of 87,
Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 on May 9, 2012, at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints, Sandpoint Ward, North Boyer Avenue, Sandpoint, Idaho. Interment will follow at 2:00PM in the Pack River Cemetery.
Harriett was born July 3, 1924, in Bridgeport, Nebraska, the daughter of Walter Andrew and Maude Ellen (Jackson) Wood. She attended grade school in Angora, Nebraska, until moving to Idaho in 1936. Harriett graduated from the 8th grade at the Algoma School which was located south of Sandpoint.
Harriett and her family moved to the Selle area while she continued her education in Sandpoint. Harriett graduated from Sandpoint High School with the class of 1942.
After graduation, she started working at the AAA Office in the Bonner County Court House which was managed by Harold Kiebert. She continued working there until she married Vernon Edward Shadel on April 18, 1945, at the home of her parents in Selle.
Harriett also worked at the Sandpoint Creamery and M & J Grocery Store. Many will also remember her behind the lunch counter at the Sandpoint Livestock Auction Barn originally located on North Division Street in Sandpoint, where she served up hamburgers, hot coffee and home made pies with Marjorie Sphar. When Marjorie moved to Washington, Harriett continued to run the lunch counter until the business closed in 1970.
Harriett worked part-time at the Ben Franklin store in Sandpoint. The business later became known as Taft’s Variety Store. She worked in the craft department, giving craft lessons until she retired. Harriett belonged to the Selle Club, the Chatter Bee Club for over 50 years. And she played Bunco every month for over 25 years.
Harriett was an active member of the Church of Christ Latter Day Saints, Sandpoint Ward where she worked in the church library.
Harriett’s parents, Walter and Maude Wood and her husband, Vernon, preceded her in death. At the time of Vernon’s death on October 27, 2011, they had been married 66 Years. Harriett is survived by five children, Sharon Williamson of Libby, Montana, Kenneth and (Peggy) Shadel, Sandpoint, Idaho, Michael and (Linda) Shadel, Phoenix, Arizona, Ronald and (Angie) Shadel, Sandpoint, Idaho and Mary Ann and (Jeff) Douglas, Pensacola, Florida. Two brothers-in-law, Francis and (Helen) Shadel, San Jose, California, Leigh Shadel, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and one sister-in-law, Grace and (Vincent) Escriva, Elkton, Oregon, 12 Grand Children, 14 Great Grand Children and numerous Nieces and Nephews.
The family would like to give thanks to the Hearthstone Village staff for taking such great care of Harriett for the last four years.
Donations may be made to the Pack River Cemetery or the local Sr. Citizens Center in Harriett’s name.
