Walter “Carl” May, 74, of Sagle, long time area business man died, Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 2:50AM, after a 3 year battle with cancer.
He was born June 9, 1938 in Ada, OK, delivered at home by his aunt Margaret May-Hall on an 80 acre small farm in a log cabin. Carl’s parents were Walter I May and Mary Ellen Hall. Carl’s parents moved to California in the early 1940’s to work in the fruit harvest and later in Hydraulic tunnel construction.
Carl owned 2 flat bed trucks in Riverbank, California and hauled tomatoes and fruit to local canneries and hay to local dairies, with his brother-in-law Ted Cunningham. In 1964 Carl moved his family to Sandpoint (Sagle) Idaho and worked in the woods, logging for 10 years. Then for 25 years built hiking trails under contract for the USFS and BLM until he injured his knee and had to retire from that work.
In 1992 he purchased an established Honda dealership and built it to a viable and successful business, May’s Honda, which runs like a well oiled machine by his well chosen employees.
Carl is survived by his wife of 54 years Dianna de Mattos May and two sons: Harvey May, Matt (Dawna) May and 1 daughter Ruth (Jeff) Eich; four grandchildren Daniel, Samantha, Adam, and Spencer; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, two sisters: Carolyn Starnes, Peachtree City, GA, and Ellen Ulrich of Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter and Mary May, brothers: Richard and Johnie May, and one sister: Letha Jean Cunningham.
A private family burial at Seneacquoteen Cemetery on Dufort Rd will take place before Carl’s Life Celebration. The Celebration will be held at Stillwater Ranch, Sunday, July 29, 2012 at 2:00PM. All friends and neighbors are invited. Food will be provided. Come and relive your experiences with Carl.
