Richard “Dutch” Hoff passed away on September 17, 2012, at
age 75, after a life full of searching for adventure. At age 17 he joined the Marines to see the world. After returning to his home in York, Pennsylvania; he met his wife of 54 years, Yvonne Hagarman Smith and his son Rodney Smith. Dutch and Yvonne had two more daughters, LeAnn (Greg) Howell now of Hayden, ID and Tricia (Geoff) Chamness of Lynden, WA.
Dutch worked as a cement finisher in the summer and drove short and long haul tractor trailers in the winter. He started his own concrete business and for 15 years took great pride in personally showing his family each sidewalk and porch in his portfolio. In 1982, Dutch decided he would pack up his family and head to Washington in search of gold. He dredged for gold and hard rock mined in Blewett Pass. Unable to support his family during “his gold rush” he found work as a Union cement finisher until his retirement in 1992. He relocated to “God’s Country” in 1993 and settled in Careywood, ID.
Pap proudly leaves behind his seven grandchildren; Ben Landis, Abbi Landis, Dalton Schoonover and Larissa Howell Palm of ID, Jamie Smith Herman and Stacey Smith of PA, and Caleb Chamness of WA. His great-grandchildren Bri’yana Smith, Serenity Landis, Baylee Landis, Elijah Landis, Kaylee Herman and Hayden Arbogast.
Dutch is survived by his sisters Janet Crawford, Virginia (Ron) Crone, Joanne Shephard, Evie (Rod) Holsinger and Jessica (David) Westrom. During his life Dutch mourned the passing of his parents Clarence and Evelyn Hoff and his son Rodney Smith.
