Elmer George Dexter

December 16, 1928 — October 30, 2012

Elmer George Dexter’s' turn on earth ended peacefully in Sandpoint, Idaho, 30 October 2012. He was born in Lynn, MA on 16 December 1928 to Bertram Ellsworth Dexter and Myrtle Etta Peabody. Elmer’s' older brother, Roger, passed away several years ago. Elmer is survived by his wife, of 59 years, Sally Dexter; his children, Mark, Tracy, Karen, Troy, Ethan, Heidi, and now has 19 grand children and at least 9 great grand children. Elmer joined the US. Air Force at the tender age of 17. Dexter gleefully played on the Air Force hockey team where he became known as “Dirty Dex”. Dexter was stationed in several places such as Greenland and Alaska. During his service, Dexter became Crew Chief on the VIP Aircraft that flew government officials and the 6th Army Special Services entertainment crew. After retiring from 20 years of active Air Force service, he served several years of reserve service while maintaining the State of Maines float airplanes. Elmer and family moved to Sandpoint along with 2 foster children (Don S./Marie G.) to create Aerodex, airplane repairs, rebuilding, fabric work and annuals. Elmer did not let the demands of his business interfere with his real life, consequently several customers became frustrated when they found, "gone sailing," or "winds up" on his hanger door. Elmer was a Spokesman Review distributor for Sandpoint for awhile; he created the first dedicated indoor Remote Control race track in the Northwest in downtown Sandpoint and was know to have unshakable integrity in all his endeavors. He served as Bishop for the LDS Church in Bangor, Maine until moving to Idaho and twice as Bishop here in Sandpoint and Westmond Wards. He worked as Church Custodian for several years. He was very difficult to help, because "if you want it done right LET HIM DO IT HIMSELF!!” His first answer BEFORE the question was allowed to be completed, was always "No", with a sparkle in his eye. A Memorial Service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 3, 2012 in the Westmond Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bishop Ben Thompson will be officiating.
