Rolland C. Ames, 89, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on Monday, February 11, 2008.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, February 15, 2008 in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. Pastor Jon Pomeroy, First Church of God, will officiate and interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Visitation will be conducted on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 14th, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM at Coffelt Funeral service.
Rolland was born in Bole, MT on Sept. 18, 1918 the son of Ernest and Myrtle Ames. As a child he watched the family surface mine coal and played in the coulees in Montana.
The family moved to the Sandpoint area in 1922 and he attended school, near Dover, at the foot of Breadloaf Mountain. He also attended the Sunnyside School, the Dover School, and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1936. Following high school he, and his brother Merle, worked in the woods doing blisterrust control and as sawyers. He married Dorothy Deroshia on July 5, 1941 in Coeur d’Alene, ID.
During WW II he moved to Seattle, working for Boeing Aircraft Co. He was a riveter and worked after hours, and on weekends, doing quality control. When the war was over he turned down a foreman’s position and returned, to Sandpoint, to work in the woods.
The Ames Brothers Construction Company was established, by Merle and Rolland Ames, and began building quality homes locally. He continued in the construction business until his retirement in 1980.
He enjoyed fishing on the river, taking care of his home, his garden, and going hunting.
He is survived by his wife, of 66 years, Dorothy Ames, of Dover, ID; 2 children Gloria (and Gene) Holt of Sandpoint, ID; Rich (and Mary) Ames of Spokane, WA; 5 grandchildren Luera Holt of Sandpoint; Troy (and Tammy) Holt of Sandpoint; David McCarthy of Spokane, WA; Michael McCarthy of Sandpoint; Ryan Ames of Spokane, WA; and 3 great grandchildren.
His brother Arnold “Jack” Ames and his sister Lorna Popejoy, both of Dover, ID also survive.
His parents, 3 sisters Mildred Graves, Dorothy Henry, and Violet Peterson, and his brother Merle preceded him in death.
