Delbert Edward Piatt, 100, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Military graveside rites will be scheduled later in the spring. Delbert was born on Dec. 14, 1907, in Sandpoint, Idaho, the son of Martin Luther and Emma Piatt. He attended local schools and then went to work as a logger. He logged with horses, in the area that is now residential Sandpoint. He also worked on the “donkey trains’ of that era, and began his career in construction. In WW II he served with the U.S. Navy, spending time in the Aleutians and off the coast of Alaska. After the war he followed construction, working as a heavy equipment operator. He worked throughout the Northwest, also working on the Northslope, helping put in the Alaskan Pipeline, retiring about 1980. He was a former member of the VFW in Lewiston, Idaho and the Operating Engineers, local # 370, out of Spokane, WA. He loved going to the area Casinos, hunting, and fishing. He had a great sense of humor and loved telling stories. Delbert is survived by his daughter Arlene Orr of Lincoln, MT; a step daughter Gloirlee Pence of Kamiah, ID; 8 grandchildren; and numerous great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 6 sisters, and 5 brothers.
