Elbert "Bert" Brotherton

April 18, 1929 — March 18, 2013

Elbert (Bert) Brotherton (1929-2013) Bert died at his son’s house while under the care of Hospice House in Bowling Green, Kentucky. He was born in New Britain, Connecticut to Ethel Thompson and Elbert Brotherton. He attended schools in Plainville, Connecticut and held English and American Literature degrees from universities in Connecticut and South Florida. He was a lifelong educator having taught thirty-six years in Monroe, Connecticut and Lee County, Florida. Bert married Althea Barry in Stratford, Connecticut in 1951. They enjoyed four children, six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Children: Lorinda Brotherton and Walter Majoros, Juneau, Alaska; Mark Brotherton, who died at the age of forty-four, and Elizabeth Brotherton, Fort Myers, Florida, Timothy and Susan Brotherton, Bowling Green Kentucky, and Jennifer and Victor Brotherton-Manna, Sandpoint, Idaho. Grandchildren: Megan and Scott Broadbent, Bowling Green, Kentucky; Matthew Majoros, Anchorage, Alaska, Stuart Brotherton, El Paso, Texas; Sarah Alli Brotherton-Manna and Lee Guthrie, Ketchikan, Alaska; Jesse Majoros, Portland, Oregon; and Seneca Brotherton-Manna, Sandpoint, Idaho. Great-grandchildren: Timothy and Adalyn Broadbent, Bowling Green, Kentucky. Also surviving are special family members Shelly McKee, Indiana, Joyce Brotherton and Kenneth Barry and their families of Connecticut. Bert was predeceased by his son, Mark, his parents, and his siblings, Ronald and Caryle Ann Brotherton. Bert and Althea made their home in the mountains of Northern Idaho. He was a hard worker and a true scholar and a gentleman. He devoted his life to his wife and his family, loving them above all else. He conducted his life and his twelve-year journey through Alzheimer's with quiet dignity and strength. He will be greatly missed and forever loved.
