George Smith Roberson, 88 of Sandpoint passed away Sunday, May 12, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be conducted 10AM Wednesday May 15, 2013 at Coffelt Funeral Service. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memorial Park with military honors.
He was born the seventh of ten children on Nov. 3, 1924 in Hill City, South Dakota to James and Lula Roberson. He attended Hill City School and graduated in 1943. He was drafted in 1944 into the U.S. Army and served in the European Theatre for two years. He received the World War II medal, American Campaign, European, African, eastern Campaign, and good conduct medals. After the war ended he served in the motor pool at Camp Beal, Ca, and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He went to Roseburg, Oregon to find a job and while there met his wife, Deloris Sommerfeld. They were married April 30, 1948 and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. George owned and operated lumber trucks for 2 years before moving to Sandpoint in 1950 where he worked for Holine Sand and Gravel. He also worked on Cabinet Gorge Dam for 3 years.
He move to Nordman, Idaho and worked for the Forest Service as fire marshal. He move back to Sandpoint in 1954 where he owned and operated the Mobile Service Station on the corner of First and Bridge Street. He sold that and worked for Safeway Stores for 15 years as produce manager and checker. He later worked for various saw mills, retiring from Riley Creek Lumber Company in 1986 after 15 years as a fork lift operator. George also owned and operated George Roberson Dairy which he sold in 1973.
George was a wonderful husband and father. He always worked very hard and believed if you were going to do a job, do it right. His greatest joy was his family, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He liked to hunt and fish, play cribbage, canasta and pinochle and would win every time in his cribbage.
He loved his Lord and Savior and served him every day.
George is survived by his wife: Deloris; children: Charles (Linda) Roberson of Priest River, ID, Connie (Eldon) Otto of Wenatchee, WA, Carleen Roberson of Sandpoint, Lula (Allen) Osborne of Sandpoint, Tania Roberson of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; grandchildren: Erik (Deanne) Turrell and Talitha (Rob) Dixon both of Coeur d’ Alene, ID, Jeremiah (Sebena) Roberson of Kent, WA, Rebecca (Jim) Ivy of Sandpoint, Bobbie (Jason) Hills, Onita (Kelly) McNair, Ona (Justin) Hastings of Wenatchee, WA, Amber (Scott) Palmer of Curlew, WA, Dakota Peters of Sandpoint, ID, Samuel Osborne, Rachel (Steve) Husband, Hannah (Tommy) Mills of Sandpoint. He is also survived by his great grandchildren: Ethan Roberson of Kent, WA, Tyler, Kiera and Hope Turrell of Coeur d’ Alene, Mason and Clarisse Hills, Conner Hastings of Wenatchee, WA, Kaytee and Jacob Hunter of Coeur d’ Alene, Morgan and Maxwell Husband, Sterling and Oliver Mills, Makayla and Allysa Baker, Austin Ivy of Sandpoint, Ella and Amelia Palmer of Curlew, WA. He is also survived by his sisters: Alice Lowe of Chandler, AZ, Dorothy Niesenbaum of Pleasant Hill, CA, and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his 5 brothers and 2 sisters.
