Velma Irene Gordon

October 29, 1928 — December 20, 2013

Velma Irene Gordon passed away in Logan, Utah early Saturday morning, December 21, 2013 as a result of complications associated with COPD. The family invites all who knew her to a memorial service at 10:00 am on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Coffelt Funeral Chapel, 109 N. Division in Sandpoint. Interment will take place in the Pack River Cemetery. Velma was born on October 29, 1928 in Havre, Montana, daughter of Wilma & Samuel Marshall. She grew up in Glasgow, Montana until her family moved to Sandpoint, Idaho during her teenage years. It was after moving to Sandpoint that she met a handsome young sailor named Bill Gordon. They were married in Thompson Falls, Montana on July 3, 1948. They lived for awhile in Sandpoint until moving to Sagle where they built their home on Bottle Bay Road. Bill and Velma raised their family in this home and lived there together until Bill’s passing in 1992. Velma worked as a school bus driver for several years and is remembered fondly by many of her students. She later became a contract rural mail carrier for the Post Office and worked along with her husband, Bill, at both the Sandpoint & Sagle Post Offices. Following Bill’s passing, Velma made the decision to serve a volunteer mission for the LDS Church doing Family History research in Salt Lake City. She had always been an avid genealogist and truly loved the opportunity to do this work for a year, full-time. After her mission, Velma moved to Henderson, Nevada to live with her daughter, Eve (Gordon) Burch. Velma enjoyed being a live-in grandma and helping to raise four of her eight grandchildren during the 11 years she lived there. As Velma’s health began to decline, she made the decision to move again to be near family. This time she moved to Logan, Utah in 2008 to be near her younger brother, Joseph Marshall. She resided at the Terrace Grove Assisted Living Center and moved to the Sunshine Terrace Nursing Home following a stroke in 2011. She was dearly loved by the staff & residents of both locations and was always busily involved in the facilities’ many activities. Velma is survived by three children: Phillip (Adele) Gordon of Sunnyside; Eve (Robert) Burch of Henderson, NV; and Bill (Crystal) Gordon of Sagle; eight grandchildren: Michael, Eddie, Angie, Tyler, Julia, Adam, Joshua and Rachel; 7 great-grandchildren; and three siblings: Annie Martin, Loretta Short and Joseph Marshall. Velma was preceded in death by her husband, William Gordon, her brother, Thomas Marshall, and great-grandson, Cody Gordon.
