Elva "Jean" Price passed away on New Year’s Day 2014 in Sandpoint, Idaho. She was surrounded by family.
Jean was born August 21, 1929 in Colton, California. Jean was preceded in death by her Father, Mother and sister Ina as well as her brother Joe and her beloved husband Richard “Dick” Ernest in May 1993. She is survived by her children Ranel (Ron) Hanson and Richard “Rick” (Debby) Price, her grandchildren Meyla Bianco Johnston (Jared) Johnston and Brooke (Josh) Stebbins and Devin (Nikki) Price and Ryan Price. She is also survived by her brothers Walt (Dorothy) Powell and Howard (Joanne) Powell and her sister-in-law Noreene Linton. Her beloved great-grandchildren are Owen and Lucas Stebbins and Lola June Price. She is also survived by her faithful dog Hallie.
Raised in a Southern Baptist household on a small ranch in California, Jean enjoyed the opposite of this conservative sensibility. Throughout her life, she appreciated having a good time, wearing beautiful clothes and jewelry and playing cards, particularly bridge, and playing golf. Until her last day, her nails were always meticulously manicured. Jean was a beautiful and dignified woman who kept an immaculate home and enjoyed having things just so.
She met the love of her life, Dick Price, when both were just teenagers. They were married soon after in May of 1948. Theirs was a true love story, a match meant to be which began as high school homecoming King and Queen and grew into golfing partners and doting grandparents. Dick and Jean spent many happy years together and Jean identified the era when “the kids were young” as the happiest time of her life. Dick preceded her in death by many years but the love they shared never dwindled.
Her working life included briefly being a hairdresser and a bank teller for many years. She liked numbers and always kept her checkbook balanced. She enjoyed Sees candies, watching ball games, gin and tonic, and warm weather.
Having survived breast cancer at a young age, Jean developed a tenacity that accompanied throughout her life; she knew her mind, never hesitated to voice her opinions and was clear on what she believed. Although she endured many hard times in her life, Jean maintained a graceful and resilient presence through it all, and enjoyed the good times thoroughly.
Grandma Jean always made sure her grandchildren received special presents at holidays and was a loving grandmother interested in everything her grandchildren did.
The family would like to thank Auburn Crest Hospice in Bonners Ferry for providing Jean and her family compassion and comfort during the hardest time.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Hospice or Panhandle Animal Shelter.
