Harlie Duane Hanson

Harlie Duane Hanson was born on June 21, 1935 in Spokane, WA to Chris & Nada Hanson. He grew up in the Coeur d’Alene area where he attended school and learned to enjoy music, fishing, hunting, boxing and race car driving. When he turned 17 he joined the U.S. Navy and spent the next four years experiencing all of the joys and tears of being a Corpsman in the Korean War. He was able to expand on his boxing and won All Navy Pacific Fleet in his weight class. He thought the world of his Captain while serving on the USS Hopewell DD681 and just a few years ago he felt honored to have, Captain Mark M. Gantar visit our home and they had a really wonderful time reminiscing their years on the ship. After discharge from the Navy, Harlie came back to N. Idaho to find his parents had moved to Sandpoint & he went into business with his father Chris Hanson building the Hanson & Son Machine Shop on Poplar Ave.... Shortly after that he decided to buy a truck & go long haul trucking...He trucked from coast to coast for the next 13 years, during this time he had 3 children. Then, in 1972 he married the love of his life & true sole mate, Lana Kay...That is when the adventures really started because they did everything together, living life to the fullest. Harlie taught Lana how to hunt which led to a competition of who could catch the biggest fish and bag the largest trophy. Together they enjoyed Snowmobiling, taking long trips on their Gold Wing Motorcycle, dancing the night away to the big band era of music, fishing, hunting & spending time with their blended family. In 1974 Harlie decided to take the opportunity to work in Alaska on the Pipeline & went to work for Kaps Transport hauling pipe & dispatching for 2 years from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. It was time to move back to Sandpoint so he obtained his US Coast Guard Captains License & started Sandpoint Charter Service, a fishing charter going for the “Big Kamloops”. He was featured in several fishing magazines and papers and in most recent years you could see him and Lana on their fishing vessel on Lake Pend Oreille. Since he loved animals and there seemed to be a shortage of good strong Labradors in the area he decided to start Fry Creek Kennels in 1975 where some of the finest hunting stock was developed in the breeding program. Since Dobermans were a favorite of the family both breeds were maintained. Harlie was known for his love of life and great sense of humor. He was a 53 year member of Lakeside Lodge 42, Shriners International, and a 32o Scottish Rite of Free Masonry since 1962. He was also a member of Alaska Shrine Club, the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club where he had served on the Board of Directors in the very early years of the club. He sponsored several children to go to the Shriners Children Hospital in Spokane. He is survived by his wife, Lana Kay Hanson, his children Valerie Hughes (AZ); Harlie C. Hanson (Cindy) of Post Falls; Shannon Yarbrough (Joe) of Delta,UT.; Matthew Linscott (Casey) of Sagle and Mark Linscott (Vickie) of Sagle; 14 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
