Hazel Marcille (Brodkord) Hamann passed away at her home surrounded by family in Kootenai, Idaho on April 19, 2014 at age of 87. Memorial services will be conducted 3:00PM, Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Coffelt Funeral Service with Dale McCall, officiating. She was born to John and Kareen Brodkord of Kootenai on December 19, 1926. She attended Bonner County Schools and left Sandpoint High School her Junior year to attend the University of Idaho due to a teacher shortage because of the war and earned a teaching certificate. She immediately started teaching in 1945. She taught in Algoma, Seneacquoteen, Vay, Kootenai, and Farmin teaching Grades 1 through 8 in one room school houses to modern schools for 40 years. After she retired she continued teaching, as an aide at the Kootenai Elementary and tutoring at her kitchen table. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Idaho in 2006 after the University waived the student teaching requirements she never fulfilled because she was busy teaching and raising a family. Hazel had many hobbies; she loved to garden and raise orchids, canning, reading, baking, embroidery, crocheting, crossword puzzles, picking huckleberries, and playing games, but most of all she loved to play cards. There was always room at the table for a card game and she would teach anyone willing how to play. She was involved in Ladies Aide, The Kootenai Happy Ladies Birthday Club, and was also a 4-H leader. Hazel taught thousands of children during her career, mentored other teachers, was the foundation for her family and touched many, many lives; she was very loved. She leaves behind her daughter Carleen Pratt, son David Hamann, nephew Eric Hebert, grandchildren Donella (Jeff) Clark, Carl Pratt, Kelly (Brian) Gadbois, Amanda Hamann, Neal Hamann, Meghan Anderson, 7 great-grandchildren, her sister Maryetta Mayer, numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dutch Hamann and 3 sisters Eleanor Carter, Ruth Carter, and Katherine Litchfield. The family would like to thank Bonner General Hospital Hospice for their professionalism and assistance. Contributions are welcome at the Kootenai City Hall in memory of Hazel for the Bonner County Museum Kootenai Site.
