Richard A "Dick" Stevens

January 22, 1931 — November 8, 2014

Richard A. "Dick" Stevens passed away on November 8, 2014 in his home, surrounded by his family. Private graveside services will be held for the family on Friday, November 14, 2014. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 15, 2014, at noon at the Sandpoint VFW Hall. Dick was the youngest of eleven children born to Warren and Johanna Stevens. He was born on January 22, 1931 in Spring Canyon, Utah but was raised in North Idaho, which he called home. Dick graduated from Los Molinas High School in California and returned to North Idaho following his graduation. Dick was married in August, 1952 to Shirley Holmes, his ‘honey.’ Dick and Shirley had five children: Crystal, Kevin, Kenneth, Randy and Russell, all of whom settled in Northern Idaho raising families of their own. Dick’s passion was his family which is evident by all who are familiar with the family. His legacy is the love, support and camaraderie he established in his family. Dick was a lifetime area logger. He started logging with his brothers when he was only 14 years old and continued logging with his sons, grandsons and family friends. Dick was honored to have been selected as the 1997 Bull-of-the-Woods. Dick’s lifelong career in the woods continued until 2009, when he finally retired at the age of 78. Dick also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers and later his children and grandchildren. Dick and his brothers established large elk hunting camps, in close proximity to each other, in the mountains of North Idaho. Elk camp was a family affair with Shirley serving as the camp cook. When Dick was not logging or hunting he would take road trips with his honey, sometimes to specific destinations and other times just a long drive to see the land. It was a rare day that anyone would find Dick without a smile on his face as he loved life and lived his life to its fullest. Dick is survived by his wife Shirley, his four sons, Kevin (DeLynda) of Sandpoint, Kenneth (Theresa) of Sandpoint, Randy (Judi) of Sandpoint and Russell (Laura) of Sagle; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren, with more on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren A. and Johanna C. Stevens; all of his brothers and sisters, Warren, Boyd, Ray, Jerry, Jack, Sorn, Frank, Beatrice, Vida and Ruth; his daughter Crystal Gantenbein; and his great-grandson Curtis Fournier.
