Charles Rodney Charlton was born October 30, 1951 in Sandpoint, Idaho to Lois E. and Earl L. Charlton. Charles (Chuck) graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1970. Upon graduation, he worked at Safeway in Sandpoint. In 1971, he married Deborah Hahn and moved to Arlington, VA. Two children, Christopher and Cynthia, were born of this union.
Chuck had numerous construction jobs in the area including construction on the Washington, D.C. Metro Subway System which was just beginning construction as well as the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. In 1978, Chuck and his family moved to Spokane continuing his construction career. In 1980, he moved to Palmdale, CA and worked on many construction sites in the southern part of the state. In 1984, he moved back to the Sandpoint area and worked for Burt Wilkinson as well as other odd jobs. He joined the Independent Highway District in 1985 working with heavy equipment and plowing the city streets during the winter months. In 1991, he opened his own business, Charlton Home Improvements doing large and small jobs for local residents until he became disabled in 2001 and had to close his business.
On April 1, 1988, Chuck married Patsy Gibbs and lived in Sandpoint for 16 years. In 2001, Chuck and Patsy moved to their new home in Laclede, ID and have resided there for 14 years. Chuck enjoyed reading, gardening, camping, kayaking and fly fishing with his brothers.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy; son, Christopher & his wife, Terry, grandsons: Justin and Cameron of Longview, WA ; Cynthia Seitz & her husband, Arron, grand children: Monika and Eirik of St. Maries, ID; siblings: Beverly Charlton, N. Bonneville, WA; Walt & Earline Charlton, Norman, OK; Dan & Sonya Charlton, Arlington, VA; Patricia Smith, Lacey, WA and Lois Ann Metzler & husband Tom, CO; nieces: Kristina (Smith) Elkins, Moscow, ID and Jennifer Charlton, VA, and his best friend, John Campbell.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Earl.
Coffelt’s is in charge of arrangements. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 14 at the Sandpoint United Methodist Church, corner of Main Street and Boyer Avenue.
The family is requesting flowering plants that can be put in Chuck’s garden or a donation to the American Cancer Society in his name can be made.
