Hugh Eugene “Gene” Thurlow, 87, passed away, at his home in Sandpoint, on Tuesday, January 19, 2016.
Memorial services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, January 23, 2016 at Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Chuck Wigton, officiating.
Gene was born December 1, 1928 in Sandpoint, Idaho the son of Hugh and Eva LaComb Thurlow. He was raised and educated in Sandpoint, graduating from Sandpoint High School in 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Midway from 1948-1952 during the Korean Conflict.
Following his honorable discharge he attended the University of Idaho for 3 years. On October 18, 1958 he married Genevieve Berger in Sandpoint. Together they raised 6 boys: Kevin, Ken, Greg, Rich, Roger and Terry. Gene worked many years for the U.S. Forest Service later working in various local mills until his retirement in 1992.
He enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and was always up for a game of pinochle or any other card game. He was a member of the American Legion and the Eagles Lodge.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Genevieve, 5 sons: Ken, Greg, Rich, Roger and Terry; 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandson; 2 sisters: Beverly Paul of Libby, Montana, Donna Collinson from the tri-cities and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother: Gerald Thurlow; 2 sisters: Shirley Gerkin, Evelyn McNearney; 1 son: Kevin Thurlow and a daughter-in-law: Hiedi Thurlow.
