Constantine Charaia Peratos, AKA “Gus”, AKA “Charlie”, AKA “Baba”, AKA, “Greek Papa”, Born August 15th, 1934-Passed away May 4th, 2016.
After a long life and a brief illness Gus passed away peacefully in his sleep surrounded by his family. He currently is enjoying the reward that is promised to all who confess their belief in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Gus spent his early years in his hometown of Nafpaktos, Greece where he could be found fishing the waters of the Mediterranean Sea. At six years old he caught an octopus which tried to pull him into the ocean but after a desperate struggle he was able to stone it to death and then took it home for the family dinner.
In the early 1940s during the Great War, he and many residents of the village took refuge in many caves and tunnels around the village to escape the horrors of the war.
In 1948 he took a steamer to Canada and became a Canadian citizen. Many stories were related about his years working as a cook/bootlegger in many of the camps in and around Yellowknife. In 1960 Gus migrated south to Pasadena, California where he worked as a chef at Tops Diner. There he met a waitress named Sandra; they married. Later they purchased the diner and ran it for several years. They had 4 children together. Gus gave up the diner later and operated European Landscape Company in Pasadena, California where he had a reputation as an excellent landscaper.
In the early 1980s Sandra went east and Gus stayed in Pasadena and retired there. He spent his days for many years holding court with his Greek friends at Lucky Boys in Pasadena. He was a fixture at many of the So Cal Horse tracks and was an avid racing fan. The trainers, owners, jockeys, and probably the horses all knew him by name.
At the urging of his family who had all become Bonner County residents, he moved to Sandpoint in 2010. In Sandpoint, Gus made many friends while working at Ben Franklin Craft Store and later owned and operated as an antique and collectables dealer in his downtown store, Nostalgia Antiques.
Gus was a lovable man who made fast friends wherever he went. He will be missed by many. He is survived by his daughter, Kaliope (Kandy) Breckenridge; his sons: Constantine (Costa) Peratos and his wife Anna, Harilaos (Herb) Peratos and his wife Michelle, Christopher Peratos and his wife Shalem and John Breckenridge. Also missing him will be his 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren as well as his old gang at Lucky Boys, especially his good longtime friend there, John.
Memorial services will be held Friday, May 20th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sandpoint Assembly of God Church. Flowers can be sent to the family and the service at 423 N. Lincoln St. Sandpoint, Idaho.
All are welcome to attend.
