At the conclusion of a beautifully ordinary life, Delbert Kenneth Sheffler, age 83, passed away peacefully August 11 at The Bridge in Sandpoint.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, August 15 at Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. There will be a gathering of friends and family at New Song Bible church in Sagle directly following the interment at Pinecrest Cemetery.
Delbert was born in Sandpoint on October 2, 1932 to Nettie and Earl Sheffler. He attended Sagle School and Sandpoint High School, and played many games of baseball on the fields around the area. At 17 years old, Delbert married Mona Jane Brisboy, the love of his life. In their early years together, they traveled around the Northwest while Delbert worked on a number of large construction projects, including the Albany Falls, The Dalles, and Cabinet Gorge Dams. They returned to Sagle when he took a job at the McFarland Pole Yard, where retired as plant manager after 39 years with the company.
Delbert enjoyed a nice dinner after work — unless it was casserole or taco night — after which, too tired to remove his heavy boots, he would instead compel the nearest grandchild to do it for him. Delbert worked hard to provide for his family, his main focus throughout his life (apart from babies, dogs and kittens). He and Mona Jane had five children: Dwight, Dwayne, Darrell, Sheryl and Charlene. He worked tirelessly to provide for them while also taking time to hunt, fish and camp with close friends and family. His door was always open and he was always ready to lend a hand when help was needed.
Delbert is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mona Jane, his sister Ethel Ann (Bob), his children Dwight (Pam), Dwayne (Karla) and Charlene. He leaves behind seven granddaughters, eight great granddaughters and five great-grandsons, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His lasting legacy will be the family he created.
