Hazel Milton Lawson

November 19, 1909 — September 8, 2009

Hazel Lawson passed away quietly on Tuesday morning, September 8, 2009, at her home at Life Care Center in Sandpoint. Ms. Lawson was born November 19, 1909, on a farm near Ava, Missouri, the fourth of five children. She married Gail Lawson in 1929, and they had one daughter. In 1935, she moved to San Francisco, living there until 1954, when she relocated to the San Fernando Valley of California. She enjoyed traveling when she could, and also enjoyed horseback riding with her daughter and son-in-law, among various other outdoor activities. In 1974, she retired from a mortgage company and was then free to play golf more frequently, which was a favorite pastime. In 1986, Hazel suffered a stroke and came to Bonner County to be closer to her daughter. She moved to Life Care Center in Sandpoint in 1998, and was considered ‘Grandma Hazel’ too many of the children that attended St. Francis Preschool and Kindergarten. She has continued to receive card and visits from those children who sat on her lap and sang songs with her. Recently, a large party at Life Care Center celebrated her centenarian status. Her infectious laugh and positive spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Hazel Lawson is survived by her daughter, Betty Jo Bliss, of Priest River, a niece, Bonnie Theobold of California, and niece Joan Morley of Nebraska. Her beloved son-in-law, Dr. Gordon Bliss, of Priest River, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 9:00 AM, Sunday, September 20, 2009, at Christ our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sandpoint. Hazel loved animals, and in lieu of flowers the family requests a donation be made to Priest River Animal Rescue, PO Box 1626, Priest River, ID 83856.
