Irene L. Sundquist

Irene LaRue Sundquist, 70, passed away in the company of family on Nov. 6, 2009, after a battle with cancer. She was a very important part of her family and community who spread joy with her compassion and contagious smile. The vigil/rosary service will be held at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, Nov. 11th in St Joseph’s Catholic Church. The mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Thursday, Nov 12th in St Joseph’s Catholic Church. Father Dennis C. Day will officiate with interment following in Pinecrest Memorial Park. Irene was born on May 30, 1939 in Edgerton, Kansas, the daughter of Alpha and Dorothy Elrod. She spent her childhood in Edgerton, Kansas where she was valedictorian of her high school class as well as being active in sports and civic clubs. She married Gordon “Doc” Sundquist in Rhode Island in 1964 and they moved to Sandpoint in 1968. Irene spent much of her life contributing to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Sandpoint. She started the soup kitchen program over 20 years ago. She was the religious education coordinator for the CCD program and an integral part of the first communion program for more than 30 years. She will be greatly missed by those whose lives she touched. She is survived by her husband of 45 years Gordon “Doc” Sundquist, brother Charles Elrod in Pittsburgh , KS; sister Judy Gillette in Olathe, KS; brother Roger Elrod in Pomona, KS; children Christopher Sundquist in Sandpoint; Lisa (Brandon) Gates, in Sandpoint; Randy (Florence) Sundquist in Ranchester, WY; Pammy Jo (Rex) Shandy in Freemond, MO; grandchildren Cody, Cory, Brian, Aaron, Calvin, Sarah, Brytani, Jorgi, Brandon, Jennifer, Suzanne, and Jacob; great grandchildren Neci, Naomi, Noah, Houston, Liam, and Vincent. She was preceded in death by her parents. Memorials may be made to St Joseph’s Catholic Church building fund, PO Box 279, Sandpoint, Idaho 83864 in memory of Irene Sundquist.
