Dorothy W. Smith passed away Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow, of congestive heart failure.
She was born June 2, 1918, to William Wesselman and Bertha Rothenfluh. She attended Sandpoint (Idaho) schools through ninth grade. She was a caretaker of other children prior to her marriage at age 16. Dorothy married Ivan Daymond Smith on Dec. 24, 1934. He preceded her in death in 1977.
Dorothy was a housewife and mother. She attended St. John’s Lutheran Church and went to the senior citizens center in Genesee. She loved to can, bowl, read and garden. She loved the earth and what it gave back. Her father owned a greenhouse. She had impeccable handwriting and won awards in school. She copied hundreds of recipes because she loved to cook and just write. If you said pinochle, she was the first one there. Everyone said that Mom was the sweetest person they had ever met.
In addition to her husband Ivan (Bud) Smith, she was preceded in death by two sons, Richard (Dick) Smith and Buddy Smith; and two sisters, Mertle Wesselman and Julie Cramer.
Dorothy is survived by a son, Ronald (Ron) Smith of Post Falls, Idaho; a daughter, Nancy Grieser of Genesee; a sister, Ruth Smith of Bonners Ferry, Idaho; two brothers, Bill Wesselman of Yuma, Ariz., and Ed Wesselman of Sandpoint; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Genesee Senior Center, with the Rev. George Kemp officiating.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11;00 am, Saturday, March 13th in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel. Rev. Dave Olson, First Lutheran Church, will officiate and burial will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Calling hours will on Friday, March 12th, from 12 noon until 6:00 PM at Coffelt Funeral Service.
