Helen Haugse

Helen Haugse, 91, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho on Monday, March 29, 2010. Private family services will be held with burial at the Lakeview Cemetery. Helen was born in Aurora, Colorado on Nov. 23, 1918, the daughter of Edwin and Rachel Urch. Helen moved to Sandpoint on Feb. 2, 1939. She met her future husband, Leonard Haugse while working at the “Tam.” Leonard would later purchase the Tavern (or Tervan) and they were married in July of 1943 in Thompson Falls, Montana. Leonard and Helen owned and operated the Pastime Café and Sportshop, from 1946 until 1979. During those years they would host the Sandpoint Lions, the Sandpoint Kiwanis, and the Sandpoint Rotary Club. Helen was the unofficial greeter at these meetings and enjoyed serving meals to the members. She also helped to cook and cater for the Lion’s Club Beach Barbeques, and the K and K celebrations. The Haugse’s leased and established, the cafeteria at Schweitzer Basin in the early 1960’s. Helen was a member of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce and the Sagle P.T.A. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, needle work, and reading. She is survived by: 3 daughters - Myrna Lee Martinez of Salem, OR, Sandi Belote-Terry (husband Dixie) of Sandpoint, ID, Debi Pielli (husband Ron) of Talache, ID; 7 grandchildren - Sally Caldwell, Leonard Burnett, Brandt Bricker, Laura Terry, Danny Terry, Shane Pielli, Katrina Pielli; 7 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; a sister Joyce Bonner of Nucla, CO, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard, and 6 siblings - John, George, Harold, Ruth, Irene, and Edith.
