Lloyd Eugene Dunkel, 88, passed away in Sandpoint on Wednesday,
May 5, 2010.
Graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM, Saturday,
May 8th, in the Pack River Cemetery, with military honors.
Lloyd was born in Hopkinton, Iowa on Sept 30, 1921; he grew up in that area, and joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, the CCCs. He also worked on area farms to help support his family. He served with the US Navy during WW II and Korea, retiring after 20 years of service. Following his retirement from the Navy he earned his masters degree at Chico State College in Chico, CA.
He worked as a seasonal ranger in New Mexico and California and as a curator for the State Park System in California. He has lived, and worked, in San Diego and Chula Vista, CA; Bethesda, MD; Trindad, CO; and Chico, CA; before moving to Sandpoint in 1975.
On July 26, 1947 Lloyd married Wilma R. Kinman in Oakland, CA; they had been married for 60 years. He was a gentleman farmer for many years, raising livestock, and always enjoyed the produce from his gardens.
Lloyd is survived by 2 sons Mark (and Arlana) Dunkel and Roger Dunkel, both in Sandpoint; 9 grandchildren. 19 great grandchildren; 3 brothers Harlan, Edward, and Lyle; 2 sisters Lucille and Dorothy.
He was preceded in death by his wife Wilma, 2 brothers Duane and Ernest, and a sister Levona.
