James Arthur Weinand, 76, of Sandpoint died peacefully, Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Palo Alto, CA, with his daughters at his bedside, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Sept. 21, 1933 at the home of his grandparents in Ray, North Dakota, the son of Francis and Cora Weinand. In the Spring of 1938 the family moved to Sandpoint. Jim attended elementary school at the local Seventh Day Adventist Church school and attended high school at Upper Columbia Academy and Sandpoint High School. He joined the Air Force on Nov. 10, 1951 during the Korean War Conflict. Upon his discharge he returned to Sandpoint and worked for Pack River Lumber in 1956-1958. He then worked as a radio dispatcher for the Sandpoint city police department from 1963 until his retirement in 1984.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and serving as a ham radio operator. James was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and the Bonner County Amateur Radio Club. His yard was a frequent gathering spot for family and friends to enjoy cookouts and his stories.
He is survived by 2 daughters: Deborah Kemp of Sandpoint, and Angela (Roger) Cordes of Logandale, NV; by 4 grandchildren: Melinda Nicole Kemp, Chris A. Kemp, Amanda Cordes (Trevor Carlisle) & Kristina M. Cordes; sisters: C. Ann (Richard) Schnibbe of Portland, OR, Nyla (Leonard) Hodge of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; 2 sisters-in-law: Lynette Weinand of Sandpoint, ID, Julie Ann Weinand of Cowley, WY; 1 brother-in-law: Duane Aberle of Deer Park, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cora, his father: Frank; 1 sister: Colleen Aberle; 2 brothers: Dustin Weinand and Michael Weinand and 1 nephew: Timothy Hodge.
Funeral services will be conducted 1:00PM, Friday, July 23, 2010 at the Sandpoint Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2255 W. Pine. Interment will follow at Pinecrest Memorial Park, with military rites by the Bonner County area veterans. Viewing will be held at Coffelt Funeral Chapel on Thursday, July 22, 2010 from noon until 6:00PM.
The family suggests memorials in James’ honor be made to the charity of donor’s choice.
