Lorna Lucille Karst-Popejoy, 82, passed away in Hanford, California on Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2010.
A memorial service, celebrating her life, will be conducted at 11:00 AM, Friday, Oct. 8th, in Coffelt’s Funeral Chapel.
Pastor Jon Pomeroy, Sandpoint Church of God, will officiate and inurnment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
Lorna was born Dec. 23, 1927, in Dover, Idaho, the daughter of Ernest and Myrtle Ames. She lived most of her life within a mile of the house she was born in. She attended 1st through 6th grade at the Dover School, which consisted of 4 rooms. She attended 7th and 8th grades at the Old Farmin School and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1945.
Lorna was 14 years old when she would walk from Dover to Sandpoint at her first job at the Sandpoint Café. She washed dishes for 35 cents an hour and then later became a cook. She was the manager at the Elk’s Club for 13 years. During the war she worked in Portland, OR, on the clean up crew, in the shipyards. In 1945 she worked in the laundry department at Farragut Naval Base. Lorna served on the election board in Dover and had also sat on the Dover City Council.
On July 14, 1946 she married Kenneth Karst, and they raised 5 children together. After Kenneth passed away she married Ernest (Bob) Popejoy and they continued to reside in Dover. Lorna lived the last several years of her life in the loving care of her daughter Penny, in California.
Lorna is survived by her children jack (and Mary) Karst of Keizer, OR; Jill (and Craig) Brockus of Sandpoint, ID; Dennis (and Shellie) Karst of Spokane, WA; Penny (and Steven) Sumaya of Hanford, CA; and a brother Jack (and Rene) Ames of Dover, ID. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, and nephews.
We shall miss Lorna’s sense of humor and her unconditional love to all who knew her. She truly blessed our lives.
