Daniel Wray Simmons of Sagle, Idaho

Died March 18, 2020

Loving husband of Josephine (Fina) Simmons for over 36 years. 

From his days as a US Army veteran through retirement from construction, when Dan set out a goal, he accomplished it. He was driven, resourceful and non-compromising. Dan earned many marksman and sharpshooter awards. His volunteerism was exemplified in many ways including being a Boys Club Wrestling Coach, General Contractor for Habitat, and a Search & Rescue volunteer.  Dan’s trail building aptitude was realized at Scotchman’s Peak, a favorite hiking venue of Dan’s.  Even after Parkinson’s/MSA entered Dan’s life, his perseverance, strength and endurance prevailed over its challenges.

 Fina and Dan enjoyed their years together retiring early and criss-crossing the country in their RV from Alaska to Florida. Dan always took the road less travelled. Everyone in Dan’s circle, including children Buffy (Dave) Dyess and Zak (Michelle) McCrary learned that “I can’t” is not an option, and he was always there for a word of wisdom, a listening ear, and a lot of love.

Dan’s grandchildren Lindsay Dyess and Roger McCrary enjoyed so many “firsts” that Papa introduced into their lives: learning to drive a tractor, riding a bike, building things like birdhouses and workbenches, shooting a BB gun, and reading maps.

Brother-in-law Mike Grima ( Lori) and Helen Grima appreciated all Dan brought to their sister’s (Fina’s) world. His guidance, realism and practicality will be missed.

To say Dan was a passionate hiker is an understatement. He hiked over a million vertical miles in elevation with his hiking buddy and good friend John Dale. Together they hiked 16 hours, 22 miles up and down Mt Whitney, and the Rim to Rim of the Grand Canyon in 13 hours.

This honorable, adventurous, mountain man will be missed by many. The lifelong lessons will endure.  Donations to MSA Coalition
