On Thursday, May 21, 2020, Donald Frank Farrar Sr., passed on to Heaven’s fishing holes at the age of 83. Don was born September 10, 1936, in Dayton, Washington, to Frank Farrar and Grace (Lamoreaux/Farrar/Stuart).
Don grew up in Sandpoint, Idaho, where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and spending time in the woods with his best friend, Bud Philips, and beloved uncles Bob and Don (Lamoreaux).
At Sandpoint High School, he participated in baseball, basketball, track, and football. He graduated in 1954 and then enlisted in the United States Navy as a corpsman, serving two of four years in Japan. After his honorable discharge, he studied history at the Univer-sity of Idaho while working summers for the Forest Service. Don also had a part-time job delivering beer, (every student’s dream job!).
Don moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1963. He worked for General Motors and also night shifts for Continental Airlines. He moved back to Sandpoint in the 1970s and worked as parts manager for Alpine Motors until retirement.
He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan. It wasn’t uncommon for Don to pick up his guitar and sing old country music songs in his beautiful bass voice. He was happiest out on his boat fishing or roaming his secret huckleberry spots with his wife, Elaine, and his yellow lab, Trapper. His personal recipe for smoked blue backs was legendary.
Don was a loving husband and will be missed dearly by his family, who would also like to thank Hearthstone Village Assisted Living for the years of their dedicated support. We will not forget the friendship and love they extended to our family and their extraordinary care of Don.
Don was preceded in death by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elaine Farrar, who tirelessly spent hours and days by his side as he battled his final journey with dementia.
Don is also survived by his sister, Jerry Burrus from Alaska; his children, Donald (Vita) Farrar Jr. of Nevada, Judy (Radd) Raynor of Sandpoint, Carla (Rob) Farrar of Sandpoint, Mike (Judy) Thurmond of Sandpoint, and Lisa (BJ) Findlay of Hayden, Idaho. Don has 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a special cousin, Betty Johnson of Sandpoint.
