Dorothy M. Brodish
On April 26, 2024, Dorothy M. Brodish went home to be with the Lord. She was in Idaho with her youngest daughter by her side, holding her hand as she tightened her grip, seemingly to say goodbye. Her other two living children were on the phone, where they were able to pray as she peacefully passed.
Dorothy lived a full life. As she always said, “Life has seasons, and seasons change,” and she lived through many seasons in her 95 years here on Earth. Born to Charles and Bertha Miller on January 14, 1929, Dorothy grew up in Altoona, PA. She was the oldest of seven, with one brother and five sisters.
She graduated from Altoona High School and attended Shippensburg University, where she graduated with a degree in Education. She married Eric Brodish in 1947, and they had four children. She was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed gardening, baking, and sewing and enjoyed passing on her knowledge to her children and grandchildren. She remarried in 1980 to Mark Shindel and was married for 18 years before he passed in 1998.
Dorothy had a servant's heart and was always helping others, whether that be with a warm meal, rides to church, or a place to stay. She taught at Thompsontown Elementary School for 30 years. After her retirement, she continued to serve others by being a Missionettes’ leader at Newport Assembly of God church and through her bed and breakfast, where she hosted visitors, missionaries, and those in need from all over the world. She always said she was a “go-go girl,” not wanting to slow down and always looking for ways to help others.
Her second husband, Mark Shindel, and her eldest son, Adrian Brodish, preceded her in death.
She is survived by her three children: daughter Salyn Stover and husband Mike Stover, son Daren Brodish and his wife Sharon Brodish, and daughter Dea Story; her nine grandchildren: Amy Brodish, George Brodish, Joseph Brodish, Amanda Smith and her husband Daniel Smith, Michael Curl, Jan Gibboney, Melissa Wilson and husband Jake Wilson, Stephanie Hysek and husband David Hysek, Jennifer Truitt and husband Wade Truitt, and eight great-grandchildren.
Dorothy’s celebration of life will be held at Boyer Funeral Home in New Bloomfield, PA, on May 14 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bread of Life Outreach located in Newport, PA.
The name Dorothy means “Gift of God,” and she was a gift to all who knew her. The world will miss a wonderful, caring woman, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, but we know that heaven is celebrating as she is welcomed to her forever home until we meet her again.
