Douglas Stephen Lieuallen

Douglas Stephen Lieuallen, 84, born on December 25, 1939, in Weston, Oregon, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2024 in his home. A man of remarkable dedication and a love of adventure, Douglas leaves behind a legacy of love, commitment to his family, and community service.

Douglas graduated with honors from McLaughlin High School in Milton-Freewater, Oregon, and went on to the United States Air Force Academy. He later earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Whitman College. He met his wife Joanne in 1963 also in Milton-Freewater. They dated for 3 weeks before becoming engaged, and were married 3 weeks after that. Throughout their 60-year marriage, Doug never missed opening a door, extending a hand, or the opportunity to compliment Joanne. He was the definition of a caring husband and father, always ensuring his family was well-provided for. He consistently told those around him how much he loved them, and how proud he was of them.

His professional journey included a notable career with Standard Oil, from which he retired in 1981 as the Northwest Operations Manager. After moving his family to Hermiston, Oregon, he built their family home together with a friend using his own hands. Doug was the type of person who could fix or build anything, and was regularly a resource for his friends and family for help with just about anything.

Douglas resumed his career, working at Tidewater Barge Lines as a terminal manager before retiring a second time in 2000. He and his wife, Joanne, then began a new chapter, traveling the country in their 5th wheel trailer, exploring new places and creating lasting memories together and with friends. They eventually settled in Sandpoint, Idaho, where they enjoyed their golden years together.

Douglas was passionate about adventuring, and living life to the fullest. He found joy in scuba diving, hiking, snow and water skiing, sailing, boating, and marathons. Camping and traveling were also among his favorite pastimes, but above all, he cherished spending time with his family.

A committed member of his community, Douglas was actively involved with the First Baptist Church, volunteered at the Festival at Sandpoint, and served on several local government committees in the small town of Dover.

Douglas is survived by his devoted wife, Joanne Grace Lieuallen. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Jean Lieuallen, and his brother, George Lieuallen. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia McGuire, and his brother, Neal Lieuallen. His family includes his children: Heidi and her husband Shawn Wilson, Wendy and her husband Scott Dunn, and Douglas Jr. and his wife Natasha Lieuallen. He was a proud and loving grandfather to nine grandchildren: Keegan (Katie) Dunn, Casey (Rae) Dunn, Garrett (Erica) Dunn, Tyler Stone, Josey (Kaden) Ledford, Megan (Cody) Mabry, Hailey Dunn, Grace Lieuallen, and Alec Lieuallen, and was blessed with five great-grandchildren: Grayson Dunn, Weston Dunn, Haisley Mabry, Hudson Mabry, and Kip Ledford.

Douglas’s kind heart, strong work ethic, and unwavering commitment to his family and community will be deeply missed. His memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

A celebration of Douglas’s life will be held on August 31, 2024, at 10AM at Pinecrest Cemetery. Any and all are welcome. Following the service, there will be a gathering at the First Baptist Church Greenhouse at 1220 Michigan Street, in Sandpoint. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to First Baptist Church in Sandpoint, Idaho in his honor.

The family would like to thank all of the medical staff and caregivers who gave their kindness, support, and guidance to the family in navigating this difficult time. They also extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have offered their support and condolences.
