Frances A. Reed of Sagle passed away in Sandpoint on August 4, 2021, after a brief illness. Frances was born January 3, 1934 in Priest River, Idaho to James and Mary (Fox) Boothe. In early 1935, they moved to the family farm on Lignite Road in Sagle. Frances attended Sagle Elementary School for eight years and Sandpoint High School at Pine and Euclid in Sandpoint four years, graduating with the class of 1952. When she was a senior in high school she worked as a legal secretary for Robert E. McFarland, Attorney at Law in Sandpoint.
Frances married Pershing Hawkins in June, 1952 and was widowed seven weeks later in a tragic logging accident. She was appointed Clerk of the Bonner County Selective Service Board in Sandpoint in September, 1952 and served until November 1958.
In 1956 Frances married Jim Reed, and they celebrated 53 years of marriage before his passing in 2010. Frances worked as office manager in his State Farm Insurance office in Sandpoint for over 25 years. They had two sons, Alan Edward Reed and Dale James Reed. After they retired, they spent over 20 winters in Mesa, AZ where square dancing was the primary activity. She also worked as a volunteer in the park mail room, and in the computer room. They made new friends from all over the world who were all referred to as “snow birds”. Jim and Frances retired to their home in Sagle in 2008.
Frances loved making quilts and also spent many hours knitting and/or crocheting stocking caps, mittens, slippers, sweaters and afghans for the needy. She knit and donated several hundred caps for the needy at Christmas time.
Frances enjoyed her vegetable and flower garden, and shared produce with family and neighbors. She also had enjoyed playing pinochle weekly with friends at Sandpoint Senior Center.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister Dolores, sister Elara Reynolds, two husbands, and son Alan. She is survived by her son Dale (Melanie) Reed, granddaughter Jennifer (Jeff Wane) Reed, grandson Curtis (Marissa Gardner) Reed, step-granddaughter Molly (Kasey) DaVault, one sister, Lasean Driggs of Sandpoint, two great-grandchildren, Christy Reed and Wyatt DaVault, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
At Frances’ request, private family services were held, with burial at the family plot at Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery in Sandpoint. Memorials may be made to Bonner General Health Community Hospice or Sandpoint Senior Center.
