George D. Agar

George Durnin Agar, 86, passed away at home on September 18, 2024, after a long and brave battle with cancer. Born on October 7, 1937, in Missoula, Montana, to Josephine and Charles Agar, George spent his early years in Plains, Montana, before moving to Sandpoint at age 10. His family ran a dairy farm on Kootenai Bay, where George grew up appreciating the beauty of the outdoors. It was in Sandpoint that he met his lifelong love, Margaret Miller, at a teen event at the Sandpoint Nazarene Church. The couple married on June 9, 1959, and were blessed with 65 years of marriage and three children: Cheri, Betsy, and Jenny. Together, George and Margaret built a home on Kootenai Bay with stunning views of Lake Pend Oreille, a place they enjoyed sharing with others.

George’s career with the U.S. Forest Service as a Geo-Tech Engineer spanned more than 30 years. He designed many forest service roads throughout the northern panhandle of Idaho and took great pride in his work. George was also an avid outdoorsman, known for his expert hunting skills and his participation in competitive bicycling and cross-country skiing races. After retiring, George and Margaret spent many winters traveling through the American Southwest, hiking, biking, and enjoying the adventure of exploring new places.

George will be remembered for his sense of humor, especially his fondness for “dad jokes,” and his ability to connect with people wherever he went. He was deeply rooted in his faith and his church, and he made it his mission to spread the love of Christ to those around him. 

He is survived by his beloved wife, Margaret (Miller) Agar, his sister Mary (Agar) Boylan, daughters Cheri Wolf of Bellingham, WA; Betsy (Allen) Oberrich of Athol, ID; and Jenny (Doug) Clemens of Nampa, ID; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Russell and Jack Agar.

A memorial service to celebrate George’s life will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at the Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene, with Pastor Chad Wilks officiating.
