Kim Patrick Smith, 71, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at his home, with family by his side. He was born Sept. 2, 1949 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Norvin (Buzz) and Pat Smith. The family moved to Southern California in 1953. Kim was an avid surfer. He had a surf club that extended decades, “The Second Outhouse Gang;” in Huntington Beach Cliffs and Bolsa Chica Beach. He surfed around the world with his surf pals, and always his best friend, Manuel Nanoca.
He joined the US Navy Sea Bees in 1967, after high school graduation, to join his big brother Mike, who was a Sea Bee also. They both were in Morocco, Tangiers and Casablanca at the same time. He surfed Africa, and had his surf board shipped over. He toured Spain, France, England and most of Europe, while on leave from the Navy. When he came home, from the service, he joined the family tool and dye business. He also went to art school for two years.
Following his retirement, in 2006, he moved to Naples, Idaho to be next to his sister and family. He is survived by brother Scott Smith, sister Jill Brow, brother Kevin Smith, nieces and nephews Clint Brow, Amber Brow, Scott Brow, Briar Brow, Matthew Smith, Jeremy Smith, Jethro Smith, Roman Smith, and Taylor Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Mike.
Kim’s favorite time of day was when he had a “few beers” at the Northwoods Lodge, in Naples, with Lil, Rog, Laurie and friends. He loved his beautiful home, view, neighbors, friends and family. He will be missed by all, but his sense of humor, and stories, will live on. What a good man, he was a “4 square guy.”
