Mona Jane Sheffler

December 7, 1934 — December 22, 2022

Mona Jane Sheffler loved her family more than anything else. She passed away peacefully on December 22nd at Sacred Heart Hospital at the age of 88 after spending an evening surrounded by some of the many that loved her dearly in return. Mona Jane Brisboy was born on December 7th, 1934, in Sandpoint and was the oldest of four siblings. As a child, she loved to tap dance and ride horses with her brothers. When she was just a teen she married Delbert Sheffler. They often said that between them, they started out with only two blankets and radio. They worked tirelessly in those early days but made time on the weekends to attend dances all around the county. Mona Jane and Delbert had five children, Dwight, Dwayne, Darrell, Cheryl and Charlene. The family remained in Sagle where Mona Jane balanced being a homemaker while working part time at the general store across from Sagle School and the old post office. Eventually, she became a Rural Mail Carrier, loving all the people she served along her route.  Her arm strength was tremendous from her years of hauling mail, and she could dominate her granddaughters in arm wrestling well into her 60s. As a young mother, Mona Jane managed her three surviving children, Sagle Helping Hand Club, Live and Learn Club, her garden, and livestock. She enjoyed fishing, picnics at Garfield Bay, Elk Camp with family and friends, and playing cards. She was always willing to host a Tupperwear party, baby shower or birthday party. Her home was the gathering place for family holidays and events. She loved to rock babies, sit in a lawn chair with a cup of coffee and watch her grandkids ride bikes with a spoiled dog by her side.

Mona Jane was a devoted Zags fan and enjoyed traveling to watch the team play. She balanced basketball by cheering for the Mariners in the summertime. However, Her favorite team was her family and she was a reliable presence at every game, play, concert, regatta, or match. She always kept her spectator chair in the back of her car. Mona Jane was a faithful member of New Song Bible Church and often hosted bible studies at her home.

Mona Jane was known for her generous spirit and was a friend to all. She didn’t hold grudges. She gave her time, money and energy generously to anyone that needed her, and her family and friends will miss being in her warm presence. She is survived by her brother Edward (Zelma), her children Dwight (Pam), Dwayne (Karla) and Charlene. She leaves behind seven granddaughters and their spouses, eight great granddaughters and six great grandsons as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Her family is especially grateful for the new friends she had made at the Bridge Assisted Living and for the excellent care she received there.

Please join us to honor her life on Tuesday, January 3rd at 11 AM at the Ponderay Events Center.  Her family would encourage everyone to wear happy colors to celebrate. Lunch to follow.

The family suggests the memorial may be made to New Song Bible Church 470250 Hwy 95, Sagle, Idaho 83860
