Zane Roy Strickland, 81, passed away on Friday, November 15, 2024 in Sandpoint, Idaho.
At Zane's request there will be no services.
Zane as born in Wendell, Idaho to Roy and Cleta (Freeman) Strickland. After a bean crop failure, Roy and Cleta moved their family of three boys, for work, to Rogue River, OR. Zane graduated from Rogue River High School in 1962 and because of the Vietnam War entered the Navy serving on tankers refueling aircraft carriers in the Pacific Theatre. While overseas his family moved to Eugene, OR where Zane resided after his honorable discharge. In 1967, he met and married Sharon Lee Vernam. They lived near Cheshire, OR and had horses, cattle, ducks, geese, guineas, dogs and cats. Their family became complete with the addition of two children; Waylon Richard and Jody Lee.
Zane moved his family to Lorane Hwy near Eugene incorporating mules into their menagerie. After both children graduated from Churchill High School Zane, Sherry and Jody relocated to Joseph, OR. Jody met and married Keith Chandler and Waylon attended Lane Community College earing his RN degree. Jody earned her Associate of Applied Science in Administrative Assistant degree from Blue Mountain Community College.
Due to health concerns, Zane and Sherry moved in 2022 to Idaho to be near Veterans Services. While living in Post Falls, Zane was admitted to the Spokane Veterans Hospital spending the first six months of 2024 there, receiving a diagnosis of medical issues caused by exposure to Agent Orange. He was transferred by the VA to a care facility in Sandpoint, Idaho living at Valley Vista until he folded up his tent and went home.
Zane was a cowboy who was happiest when he was working with cattle, hunting deer, elk, waterfowl and fishing with family and friends. He spent his free time packing his mules and riding Drifter into the Eagle Cap and Hells Canyon to camp, fish and hunt with family and friends. He also had a passion for cattle work spending time riding on cattle drives, checking the cattle on summer pasture, vaccinating and branding for and with his friends Denny and Iva Lou Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Steven B. Strickland.
He is survived by his wife Sherry, children Waylon (Hillary) and Jody (Keith), brother David L. Strickland (Tiffney), sister-in-law Janice Strickland (Steve), grandchildren Jesse Chandler and Rachelle Chandler, Trevor Strickland (Shauna) and Rory Strickland. He is also survived by numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
